Cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) have been detected in 2022 in the United States. The current strain of HPAI has the potential to be fatal to some species of birds, particularly poultry and raptors. Waterfowl can carry the virus without showing symptoms and are considered a reservoir for the Low Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (LPAI), which can mutate to HPAI. For more information on the virus and updates check Cornell’s All About Birds website https://www.allaboutbirds.org/news/avian-influenza-outbreak-should-you-take-down-your-bird-feeders/
Due to the virus and limited space to isolate new patients to avoid spread of the HPAI, the Avian Wildlife Center will not be admitting geese or adult ducks in 2022. We will be admitting ducklings.
