About Us
John and Giselle Smisko founded the rehabilitation center in 1990 and formalized the legal status of the Avian Wildlife Center in 1995 as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit. The Smiskos and their volunteers have handled thousands of birds over the years, successfully rehabilitating a range of species: diminutive hummingbirds and powerful raptors alike.
Mission Statement
The Avian Wildlife Center’s mission is to promote the conservation of native birds, provide a service to the community by presenting information and educational programs on wildlife and offering assistance for problems with wild birds, and support research to better understand birds and their interactions with our environment.
